Dear All,

Vale - Mario Rejtano

I have spoken with Penny Rejtano this evening and can now advise you of Mario Rejtano's funeral arrangements. If there is anyone receiving this email who has not heard the news, Mario sadly passed away in his sleep on Thursday night last week from an unknown cause and is survived by his wife, Penny and 3 daughters, 16,12 and 10 years. Penny advised that the autopsy has not revealed any obvious cause and that the test results could be some days. Penny tells me he had been feeling a little off-colour and nauseus during the day on Thursday but had felt better before going to bed that night. Mario's body has been released and the funeral will be on Friday in Bundaberg as follows:

  - 11am - funeral service at the Apostolic Church, Ashfield Road, Kalkie, Bundaberg
This will be followed by a gathering in the church hall to have a drink, something to eat and share some memories together.
  - 1pm - burial service at Bundaberg cemetery

I believe there will be some cars heading up from Brisbane. If you can take passengers or are interested in being a passenger please feel free to contact me and I will try and put drivers and passengers together to minimise cars. If you are driving up there please stay safe on the highways!

Vale - Shin Boo Kim

It is with great sadness that I also advise of the passing of Master Shin Boo Kim from Western Australia. Master Kim recently underwent surgery for a brain tumor and we have been advised this morning of his death. It is indeed a great loss to the taekwondo community and he will be greatly missed in WA and throughout Australia. He had several family members involved in his club and in Taekwondo Western Austraia and he is remembered particularly for his contribution to the National Technical Committee.

In Memoriam

Mario_Rejtano_3_240.JPG

Bundaberg Head Instructor of ASP Taekwondo (originally instructing in Sydney), Mario Rejtano, 44, has died suddenly overnight, 30 April, from causes unknown.

We believe he died in his sleep and is survived by his wife, Penny and daughters, Brittney, Maddison and Montanah.

Mario contributed greatly to Taekwondo in Queensland following a significant history in NSW and was friendly, approachable and always lots of fun. He has always had a smile for everyone, even when, as a coach, he may have had some on-court 'concerns'. He was passionate about his athletes and his club and about Taekwondo and Taekwondo Australia.

He was an active coach, International Referee and strong community contributor. Bundaberg, as one of Queensland's regional centres had an unusually high Taekwondo profile, thanks to Mario and his work in the community, with frequent media coverage of Taekwondo activities and a strong network with the local education community. Mario was a passionate family man and an asset to the community and to Taekwondo and will be sadly missed.

Taekwondo Queensland will advise of further appropriate details when available through website www.tkdqld.com.au and any condolences sent through Taekwondo Queensland will be forwarded to the family. Qld Masters Seminar

TQ was the first state to welcome Masters Hae Man Park and Young Woo Kwon on Friday 17 April at our state training centre at Brendale with 42 present at the seminar. The evening's training was well presented and thoroughly enjoyed by all. There were many comments about the finer points of techniques that were improved from the very personal approach from Masters Park and Kwon. With a little assistance the attending coloured belts kept up with the execution of techniques related to the higher patterns Master Park reviewed and the opportunity to work on the high-Dan patterns was highly valued by the higher ranked black belts. While Master Park worked with the higher dans Master Kwon did a sparring skills session with the lower black and coloured belts and this session was energetic and a great review of skills. The Masters, though they must have been tired from their flight from Korea were approachable and helpful to all participants and TQ is greatful for the opportunity to work with these true Masters of Taekwondo. With great thanks to the Masters TQ also thanks TA for the sponsorship of the activity and hope our members enjoyed the opportunity.

Womensports Qld Sponsors Taekwondo Athlete Development

Taekwondo Qld is very appreciative that Womensport Qld recently approved funding to help develop one of our athletes. Their funding provides for participation is a series of workshops being conducted through Griffith University titled "Lifeskills for Elite Athletes" and funding is supported through Qld Govt Dept of Sport and Recreation.
With participation over the last few years of a wide cross-section of sports the course is providing a significant insight into trends and skills that assist athletes in a number of ways. Womensport Qld contacted Taekwondo Qld after having met our athlete, Laura Kirby, through a networking seminar on athlete sponsorship which Laura attended. Womensport Qld asked us to pass on an invitation for Laura to take part.
Thanks to Womensport Qld and their CEO Barb Barclay for the interest in taekwondo.

Australian Olympic Referee Announced - Qld Referee in Final Consideration.

Qld Referee Director, Kerry Lister, was among those few in the final consideration for the Australian referee slot for Beijing. Kerry has been working very hard in recent times and has attended several international events as part of the selection process. Unfortunately she was not chosen on this occasion but we congratulate her on her efforts and dedication. Sam Lociano, who was the Australian referee in Sydney, has again been chosen for this special task. Congratulation Sam and Thanks Kerry (and good luck for London!).

Queensland Bronze in Incheon

Australian women's Senior 2 team, including Rebecca Green, won a bronze medal in the Women's team division at the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships on November 4/6. This is the first ever Taekwondo Poomsae World Championship medal for a Queenslander, and an examination of results from previous years show it may be the first at a world championships of either taekwondo discipline.

Germany won the division, with Spain taking out silver. The Spanish team beat the Aussies by only 0.09, which is less than one mistake. The Germans were only a further 0.21 ahead. This incredibly close result is very encouraging, as the two European teams compete all year at various events in Europe, where Poomsae is very competitive. In contrast, the Aussie team, from Perth, Melbourne and Queensland, trained together twice before departing for Korea, and with more training perhaps they might continue their success at the next world championships.

Taekwondo Queensland funded most of the cost of Rebecca's airfare to and from Perth for one of these two training sessions and this support is testament to the benefit of funding athletes on a State-wide basis.

The women's team were actually disqualified for a short time: The bus was very late arriving at the hotel, and then the driver became lost on the way to the venue. The whole Australian team was late, and the women's team was competitor number 1 in the very first division of the day. The Head of Team, Master Cho, had to do some fast negotiation, and upon official confirmation with the travel agent that the bus had indeed been delayed, the Aussies were allowed to compete after the last team.

The team that came 4th, USA, were given bronze also, in line with the new rules for sparring. This decision seemed strange, and the gap between the scores at 3rd and 4th was much larger than that between the top 3.

It is Rebecca's 3rd year on the Australian Taekwondo Poomsae team. Previous medals include a Bronze at the Korean Open in 2005, and a silver medal at the Commonwealth Championships in 2006.

In the individual division, Rebecca placed 12th, which was not an improvement from the previous year's 7th. The pattern selected to progress to the final eight was "Pyongwon", a pattern she traditionally struggles with, although there has been some improvement over the year.

Australia finished with 4 bronze medals, to finish 9th on the medal tally from 45 nations. Korea topped the table with Spain second and Iran third. Only one Korean competitor was beaten to the gold medal, and that victor was Denmark's Ky Tu Dang, who thoroughly deserved the win.
