- 6-12-2011
A stronger, healthier Australian culture through Physical Activity! A recent report from the Australian Womensport & Recreation Association indicated that lean muscle mass is the No.1 indicator of our ability to live to a ripe old age and maintain. Michelle Bridges (Australian author and trainer) writes that a study from the American Journal of Epidemiology found that a non-smoking 65 year-old woman who exercises regularly can expect an additional 16.2 years of healthy life, and if they are highly active, then they can add another 2.2 years on top of that. Importantly, these additional years are disability free.
So to achieve this you need to do resistance training (such as weights), body core exercise and cardiovascular exercise, plus maintain flexibility and mobility. (Taekwondo is PERFECT!) Crucial too is the intensity of training medium intensity to high intensity training produces more fitness benefits than low intensity training.
